Create Pie Charts in TargetMap!

We are glad to announce that a new feature has been released in TargetMap!

Now you can choose Pie Charts in addition to Pin Points to represent your data!

Upload your Excel file as always and then, in the Map Editor, inside the Pin Points option, you have a new toggle button that let you choose Pie Charts:

Click on Pie Charts and you will see how the options change:

Choose a column to be added to the PieChart. Roll the mouse over a numeric column and you will see a little menu. Click on "Add to the Pie Chart" to add it to the map.

Add as many columns as you want and voilà! You have piecharts in the map showing the percentage of imports and exports for each country.

The bigger the piechart is, the greater the total value of the territory. You can see the added columns inside the legend and the percentage of each column rolling the mouse over each piechart.

Filter column in a grid

Good news!

A new feature is available for all our users: Filter Grid. It allows you to filter several columns of your excel file and see the results in the map.

Let's see an example:

Click the icon to open the window of Filter Column.

Then, choose your filter type. Depending on your column type (text or numbers) different options will be displayed.

Type the text or number you want to filter.
Click OK and see the results!

You can click the same icon to remove the filter whenever you want and get back to the previous state or choose another filter. You can add as many filters as you want.

More than a million visitors in less than a week

The last few days have been crazy.

Last week we published a map about the nuclear crisis in Japan with the information from the Nuclear Safety Division, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Disaster Prevention Network for Nuclear Environments (http://www.bousai.ne.jp/eng/)

The map is being updated regularly, at least twice per day.

And then, out of nothing, we started getting visitors from everywhere.

A total of 560,000 (so far) from 200 different countries have seen this map.

And people have started creating their own maps and publishing them any place they want.

Our maps have been shown or quoted in:

TargetMap as a collaborative platform

TargetMap wants to be a collaborative platform. So any advice or help from any of you is well received.

Here you have two recent examples.

Regarding the map of Japan Radiation Maximum by Prefecture we received this mail (only relevant text is quoted, the mail was larger and very polite)

“First, I think your scale may get into the “danger zone” indicated using the colors yellow, orange, and red a little too quickly. For example, Shizuoka is shown as being orange, which appears to mean something like “getting dangerous”. However, the historical data from the same data set for stations in Shizuoka show that 90 nGy/hr is the baseline in that area, with fluctuations of up to 100 in the pre-accident data. (For example, see the data for Nakamachi Omaezaki City http://www.bousai.ne.jp/vis/tgraph.php?area_id=122&post_id=1220000002 and click on 90日 [last 90 days]. Unfortunately, this historical data is only available in Japanese.)

Based on the historical data, it seems that readings up to around 100 nGy/hr are considered “normal”, so it may be better to set that level as green in the map scale. I think that the current scale runs the danger of provoking fear that may not be warranted among foreigners living in the yellow and orange areas.

Second, the notes on left hand side of the map say “Miyagi and Fukushima are completely N/A, as every single reading is Under Survey, also known as censored”. It’s possible that they are being censored, but it may also be that these stations were destroyed or lost power in the tsunami, as all of them are located within a few kilometers of the coast. (See Geir’s map http://gebweb.net/japan-radiation-map/ to view the locations of the stations.) You may want to add that information to the map notes as well.”

As a result of this email, we have modified the values of the ranges and the explanation text as we think this user is completely right in his remarks

Another example of collaboration are users that send us maps of countries that are still not available in TargetMap.com.

Last week, one wonderful user (I would say friend) sent us the map of Slovenia in an .shp file. We hope we’ll be able to implement it during this week and everyone will benefit from his collaboration.

If you do not have your data in an excel file you can use the “Value Typing” feature to insert your data by clicking on each territory.

The problem is to know exactly where all the territories are. It is sometimes difficult to locate USA counties or France Regions if you are not from those countries.

So, it is more efficient and faster to use Excel templates.

Developing Territory Manager

Territory Manager coming soon: we don’t stop developing new features for TargetMap platform. Soon we will add a powerful “Territory Manager” tool.

You will be able to create your sales structure from scratch or upload your current organization and apply changes online to analyze multiple scenarios. It will also help you to place shops, storages, health facilities…

Reassign territories by clicking on them and TargetMap will show you the new scenario both on the map and in the aggregated grid.

Balancing your sales/distribution zones will help you:

NoGeo feature. How to show on map the non-located records from your Excel file

It is not rare that after uploading your data in an Excel file, you realize that some of its records are not shown on the map.

It happens because the same territory is often written in many different ways. For example, you can find the Democratic Republic of the Congo listed as DR Congo, Congo Dem Rep, Congo (DR) and many others in distinct official documents

TargetMap accepts many of them, but it is impossible to have all territory nomenclatures in our Data Base. That is why we have developed the “NoGeo” feature to solve this problem when creating your map.

TargetMap detects which records have not been geolocated and shows them to you. You just have to replace them with the appropriate territory name in TargetMap.

We have uploaded the map of Australia by States and LGAs (Local Government Area)

It is also possible to upload your data by postal codes if you want to make more accurate maps with pinpoints.

New (and more appealing) embedding style

We have implemented a more appealing and interactive embed style in case you embed one map in your blog or website.

The new embed includes the title of the map and its legend. Even more, if you click on it, it shows a larger (interactive) image of the map without leaving your blog or website.

Here can you see how it will be shown in your own web pages. Click on the image to have a larger version of the map.
Within the larger map, you can filter data by territories, view the data grid, zoom in and out...

How to use TargetMap as a Territory Manager

There are two ways of using TargetMap as a Territory Manager.

1) The simple way. Just click on territories to assign to a responsible, salesman, a commercial delegation…

It is quite useful if the areas you want to assign are not too many (States in USA, “Departemenents” in France, “Provincias” in Chile…)

You will have your map ready to export into your presentations in minutes

But if you have to deal with a great amount of data and/or you want to create a more detailed map you should work with Excel files.

2) Upload your data in an Excel file. If you upload your data by zip/postal codes you will be able to create very powerful maps.

If you want to assign smaller territories (counties, “municipios”, “comunas”…) or you are working with lots of records this is a better option. For example, you can have an excel with all your customers located by zip/postal codes, which salesman is responsible for each one and their sales. If you upload this excel you will be able to locate all customers on the map, analyze their sales and see your sales organization all in one map.

Sign your maps

Now, in TargetMap.com, you can sign your maps by uploading a customized image to be inserted in the map legend.

Just go to “MyAccount” and choose your customized image. From that moment, your maps will have that image inserted in their legend.

So, for example, you can upload your organization logo if you want to use your maps in your professional presentations, or upload any customized image you like if you are going to embed your maps in your personal blogs or websites.

How to upload an excel by territory names when different territories have the same name

When we want to make a map of a high-detail country division (for example, counties in US or "municipios" in Spain) it often happens that in the same country there are a lot of them with the same nomenclature.

For example, there are 9 counties named Benton in US.

If I upload my excel file with only "Benton" written in the geocoded column, TargetMap will not be able to guess which Benton am I referring

So, what should we do to upload an excel file by territory name and be able to locate each record in the proper Benton?

It's quite easy. Our geocoded column should contain "State + County" or "State abbreviation + county" In this case, both "Arizona Benton" and "AR Benton" will locate your record in the proper Benton.

Our excel file should look like one of these. Both will work perfect.

Common issues with Excel files

There are some usual questions that arise when talking about excel files formats and its content before uploading them in TargetMap.
If you follow these guidelines, there is a big chance of getting your excel file shown on Googlemaps without any problem.

Data must be in the 1st sheet of your excel file
All excels must contain a column with territory names or zip/postal codes. Excels with zip/postal codes create more accurate ReportMaps. From zip/postal codes you can create county, region, province... maps
1rst row of your spreadsheet is used for column titles. Use the 1rst row (A) of your excel file to describe columns.
It is better if your zip/postal code column is in text format. If your zip/postal codes column is in number format all codes beggining with a 0 (zero) wil not be detected.
Be sure your columns with quantities are in numeric format (or currency). Otherwise TargetMap will not be able to operate with those columns.

If your excel can not be uploaded, it usually is because the excel file contains corrupted cell formats. An easy solution is to copy the spreadsheet cells and paste into a new one (special paste - values)

Is TargetMap completely free?

TM is completely free for all users that share their ReportMaps with all the community. Just make your map and publish it.
Otherwise, if your data is sensible you can keep it for yourself by choosing to be a private user.

Which countries/territories are available?

Here you can find all avaliable countries, their map detail and their cp/zip structure
available countries

Why are 1st maps reviewed?

All 1st public maps are reviewed because we want all maps in TargetMap library to be useful for everybody. It is not necessary to publish test maps as all features can be tested before publishing.
Also, after your 1st map has been approved, you will be free to publish your ReportMaps without futher reviewing.

Why do I have to pay to make private maps?

The aim of TargetMap is to spread knowledge among all users. We would be happy if anyone could use data from TargetMap to improve their own research and to jump to new conclusions. So, if someone wants to create a map for his privat use, he will have to pay a small fee ($195/year or $49/month) to help us maintain the service free for knowledge sharers.

I am a private user, is my data secure?

We are very concerned about security issues, so SSL (Secure Socket Layer) protocol is implemented to guarantee the security and privacy of your data.

I want to map my own data, what should I do?

You only have to upload your data in an excel file. Just follow these tips to upload your excel and you'll get your own map in a few minutes.

Why is not my country in TargetMap.com?
Our aim is to have as many countries as possible in our database but sometimes it is impossible to get accurate maps of every country. We will try to add new countries from time to time.

TargetMap is a collaborative tool, so if you have a map of a country that we do not have or improves one of ours, you can send it to us and we´ll try to implement it in TargetMap.com. We all will enjoy a better tool if we help each other.
