FAQ

  • Is TargetMap completely free?
TM is completely free for all users that share their ReportMaps with all the community. Just make your map and publish it.
Otherwise, if your data is sensible you can keep it for yourself by choosing to be a private user.
  • Which countries/territories are available?
Here you can find all avaliable countries, their map detail and their cp/zip structure
available countries
  • Why are 1st maps reviewed?
All 1st public maps are reviewed because we want all maps in TargetMap library to be useful for everybody. It is not necessary to publish test maps as all features can be tested before publishing.
Also, after your 1st map has been approved, you will be free to publish your ReportMaps without futher reviewing.
  • Why do I have to pay to make private maps?
The aim of TargetMap is to spread knowledge among all users. We would be happy if anyone could use data from TargetMap to improve their own research and to jump to new conclusions. So, if someone wants to create a map for his privat use, he will have to pay a small fee ($195/year or $49/month) to help us maintain the service free for knowledge sharers.
  • I am a private user, is my data secure?

We are very concerned about security issues, so SSL (Secure Socket Layer) protocol is implemented to guarantee the security and privacy of your data.

  • I want to map my own data, what should I do?

You only have to upload your data in an excel file. Just follow these tips to upload your excel and you'll get your own map in a few minutes.

  • Why is not my country in TargetMap.com?

    Our aim is to have as many countries as possible in our database but sometimes it is impossible to get accurate maps of every country. We will try to add new countries from time to time.

    TargetMap is a collaborative tool, so if you have a map of a country that we do not have or improves one of ours, you can send it to us and we´ll try to implement it in TargetMap.com. We all will enjoy a better tool if we help each other.

    hi,
    I'm trying to do a wonderful on world's Tax Heaven but Caymans Island (for instance) is not on your possible countries. Is it possible to make another pinpoint by hand or should I try uploading my map on photoshop to do so?

    Hi,
    we are thinking of going to Caymans Islands to figure exactly where they are :-)

    We will add Caymans and other countries in next versions of our World Map but right now it will be faster if you add the pinpoint with photoshop.
    If you miss any other country just tell us and we will add it as soon as possible.

    Hi Lenva, sometimes it is difficult to find maps of all countries. If you could tell us where to find a good map of New Zealand (.shp), we would be glad to incorporate it to TargetMap.
    Anyway, we keep adding new countries from time to time. I can tell you that New Zealand is one of our priorities

    Buenos días, debido a mi trabajo con estadísticas de la UE, estaría muy bien si dispusierais de la zonificación en función de los NUTs-2, si es en función de los NUTs-3 todavía mejor. Entiendo que hacer una mayor desagregación conlleva disponer de la anterior. Muchas gracias

    1st question: public maps can not be deleted from public library unless you ask us to do it. It is because of security reasons. If you delete a map from "mymaps" you wont be able to access that map again.
    2nd question: You are right. What you do is an updating of your saved map. We will change the text to avoid confusion

    only your 1st map is checked to see if it is useful for the rest of the community. We check the map in less than 24 hours. After your 1st map is accepted no longer revision is needed and your maps are published inmidiatly.

    Hello!

    Firstly, my congratulations for the excellent application! Very easy to use and very helpful!

    There is a small error in the definition of portuguese administrative units, not "Conselho", but "Concelho". :)

    Finally, during the creation of my first map, I made the publication and then did some editing. However, during these update, I had problems on my internet connection and was created a new map. I already deleted the oldest map from "My Maps", but it still appears in public area.

    So, could you delete this older map, since it is duplicated, only some differences in symbology. The correct is the newest.

    I was now trying to create a map with data at the "Freguesia" level but, as there are villages with the same name in different counties ("Concelhos"), the geocoding is not well done. The ideal would be to do the geocoding with the portuguese "ZIP/Postal Code", known as "DICOFRE".

    You can obtain these codes from the data in shapefile of portuguese geographic authority (IGP):

    In shapefile, you can find the column "DICOFRE" with 6-digit code, corresponding to DI - "Distrito" CO - "Concelho" or "Município" and FRE - "Freguesia".

    To make a map with that excel you just have to copy its content into a new one and remove the Cyrillic letters from the tabs

    Kind Targetmap,
    I am currently admiring the wonderful tool this site offers, and I really enjoyed using it for a couple of experimental maps (such as Radiation alteration in Japan after Fukushima accident).

    Have you considered the opportunity of adding a commenting-discussion space to each published map, in order to encourage questions, suggestions, comparisons? This would also allow users to better learn, from the reactions they gather, how to improve their maps and making them more interesting, better focused or precise in their creatio method!

    Firstly let me say that your Japan radiation map, is awesome.
    About the discussion space, on our roster list is adding the twitter account of the map publisher, and a url trackback to allow him/her to post on which blog/url the map is embedded, so the author can choose to moderate or not the comments.
    Think that targetmap.com is global, and we haven't enough resources to moderate all comments about all published maps.

    Hi! Congrats, I like the application very much. However I see a missing feature, which I guess would be an important one, but I might be wrong..

    I think it would have been very useful if one could show another column's text data as the name label of pinpoints.

    Let's take an example. I have a business where I have to visit retail shops scattered around the city. I have their address and their name in separate columns. Currently as I understand there is no way to show the name of each retailer at its pinpoint/location.. what a great feature would this be.

    It would help sales people to plan routes and also it would be great when one wants to provide info for end users about retail shop locations. In this case one would just have to take a glance at the map, and see the location and the name of a retailer all at once visually without having to browse through a list of data!

    Una manera útil de hacer eso es tener la información de clientes en la capa de pin points, y la información de las compras en la capa de boundaries. Aplicando una operación a la columna del excel correspondiente en cada una de las capas.

    Hola Javi! muchas gracias por tu respuesta, pero a pesar de diferenciar una información por boudaries y otra por pin points no aparece la información, siempres es referente a los pin points; además los zip codes que no están en las 2 columnas a la vez no se refleja en el mapa; es decir que si impactas a un zip code que no ha comprado, no está pintado como que ha recibido comunicación

    Anonymous, we have this feature in our roadmap, but it isn't implemented yet. In TargetMap you can now get your votes in an Excel and upload it, or you can paint manually the votes in our feature Paint Map, creating a zone for "YES" and another for "NO". I was wondering why Brighton and Hove, Medway, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock all have their individual boundaries in the counties option in the United Kingdom when they're unitary authority areas. Brighton and Hove is part of East Sussex, Medway is part of Kent and Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock are parts of Essex. Please correct this!

    Thank you, I didn't noticed there was the possibility to try the Sales T. manager, maybe you should explain it in the options. Anyway, I'm giving it a try and it seems to work fine.

    Hi,

    You can export your map as a .png image to use it in a PowerPoint presentation. In Premium version you will be available to do it. If you need a Territory Manager you will be able to export to Excel too.

    If you choose Premium version you will have access to it automatically and instantly once you pay.

    Hello. I am having trouble setting a Pinpoint for the UK. In my Excel file, I've tried the County name (Buckinghamshire as well as Buckingham). I've also tried the city name of High Wycombe as well as Wycombe. I even tried London. None of these choices are working -- the Pinpoint shows up randomly in the middle of the UK. Also, my Excel file has Ireland with no county or city name. This is because our Buckinghamshire UK agent represents Ireland, but does not have a location in Ireland. When I import my Excel file, there is a pinpoint randomly in the middle of Ireland. How to fix this as well?

      This looks as a weird behaviour, may be it's how is your excel file encoded. Can you please send us a sample of your data to crew-AT-targetmap.com?

      The thing is that getting low level detail boundaries maps free of rights is hard nowadays, that's why we decided to manage territories thru pinpoints, if the open data movement gets more momentum and governments release more free geo data, we will go for it.

    I have two queries.
    1. Will an address do is post codes are not available fro the country?
    2.Can you combine countries/regions? For example can a MAP of Ireland (All Ireland) be created. For my exercise the activity covers all Ireland (as all of the Rugby Clubs in Ireland come under the Irish National entity).

      Thanks for your compliments.

      It depends or what do you want to export. If it is only the image, if you are a Share user you need to publish your map. If you don't want to publish your map you need to be a Premium user in order to export your image. If you want to export to Excel a Sales Territory Manager you need to be a Premium user exclusively.

      It's not possible. You need to create a new account. You can change from share to not to share, but not backwards.

    Thanks for your question.

    Being based on Google Maps, the projection is fixed to Lat-Long NAD83, as it is the only projection supported by Google Maps nowadays.

    I'm a bit frustrated with the exporting function (paying member). I would like to export/save a view of the US map I have created. I cannot get an all-in-one view of all the states in 1 snapshot. Next, I cannot size the map to my liking, instead there's a pre-set scale which goes from too big to small, nothing in between. Since I'm only using the US map, why can't I exclude all other countries from my view?

      Hi,

      The snapshot takes the screen that you are seeing at that moment. So if you zoom into United States the snapshot will show only United States.

    Hello. I am sooooooo frustrated trying to use your site. What I am trying to do is to map a small set of data (about 200 data points that a coded by zip code) and then setup a map that I can present a URL during a meeting to have everyone look at the map on their local devices. I went ahead and paid for a premium account so that I could map by zip code, but it appears that I would have to pre-invite everyone to my map and have them register before they would be able to view it. I simply want to create a map by zip code and allow it to be public. How in the heck can I do that? I paid for an annual account already and am sooooo very frustrated!

      Hi,

      Sorry for the delay.

      We have to discuss this particular situation here because for now it is not possible in TargetMap. Our idea to solve your problem is that you can use your map interactive in your presentation, but you need to send a snapshot of the map for the people you want them to see it.

      Premium account was thought for people who need their information for private purposes, and for security reasons it can not be shared to the general public. Zip codes is only available for Premium users.

      Is there a limit on size of export? I tried it with a smaller data set and it worked fine. If it won't export, it's worthless to me.

    Hello,
    I think your service would benefit greatly from a rating system. As of current, there are many maps of little public interest, e.g. "How I think political blocks will be in 2050" or other hypothetical and highly subjective maps.
    A voting system would, together with an order dependent on this rating (and, as present, also on recency), put maps of high public interest in the top. (Even better would be a system that takes user and/or data source source reputation into account, like the one used by the stack exchange network (stackexchange.com), but that would be difficult to establish).

    In Argentina we have the same problem, but I can not solve.
    The system can not import the column containing "province + department"
    For example, "Cordoba, General Roca" Each column works well as individuals
    Another solution know? Or does it not work for all countries?

    Hi, I just purchased a premium account so I could map out a UK territory based on postcodes, annoyingly, I only have the option to paint/fill at county level and there is no finer detail approach. Considering I need to paint a portion of the biggest county of the UK, it makes the map extremely inaccurate. Very disappointed that I've spent $50 on something that I could have used any WYSIWYG vector editor to do more easily.

      We apologize for the misunderstanding. We'll try to make clear that you can create maps with zip codes but only on pin points. We don't have postal areas, so you need to upload an Excel with your postal codes and put them in pin points.

    Hi,

    I wanted to ask your assistance in finding the resources or to way to contact the publisher regarding his sources of data.
    The map "Skin tone degree by country (Luschan Scale)" by Khina12 is based on Luschan scale. The Luschan scale range is 0-36, when dark skin tone is around 36. The max value in the map is 13.6 so I don't understand what is the exact meaning of the data.

    I'm trying to create a map showing the ancient celts territory which included regions from 4 different countries. I was wondering how can I select in one map, regions from different countries I mean, if that's possible at all...

    Hi,
    I'm trying to import an excel file with Sample names and the Zip Codes they came from (Ontario, Canada Zip Codes) The zip code is identified as the geographical location properly and I've tried formats L6Y 5S9 and simply L6Y but neither work. After it "loads data", I only see a single point, not all my points and I'm not sure if this is only the first entry or what...? And all my entries in the table below the map disappear.

    Doesn't seem to work in Canada. When loading Excel data, with a postal code column in the Excel, it doesn't recognize the data. It says to highlight the column at the bottom but Postal Code is not one of the options.

      You can have a column with names, another one for countries and you can use "Coverage" instead of sum or count. Then you use the section "labels" to put the name on the territories.

      "Coverage" is not an option for me. I have Count, Sum, Average, Direct Value. None of them do anything useful for names.

      Are you using Map my Excel or Value Typing? You have to use Map my Excel in order to be able to use Coverage.

    The most comprehensive list of countries and economic regions supported by world wide federations is ISO 3166. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166
    Using this list would help your world map satisfy all.

    I am trying to map all of the land parcels within a neighborhood of Sacramento, CA. Can I use street addresses as the geographic reference column when uploading an excel file? The street address column I would like to use for the geographic reference is formatted like this: "3901 MARTIN LUTHER KING BLVD". Target Map can't recognize this format. How should I change it?

      First of all, thanks for using TargetMap. Unfortunately we don't have street address as a mapping option. The lowest level you can map is zip codes.
