Common issues with Excel files

There are some usual questions that arise when talking about excel files formats and its content before uploading them in TargetMap.
If you follow these guidelines, there is a big chance of getting your excel file shown on Googlemaps without any problem.
  • Data must be in the 1st sheet of your excel file
  • All excels must contain a column with territory names or zip/postal codes. Excels with zip/postal codes create more accurate ReportMaps. From zip/postal codes you can create county, region, province... maps
  • 1rst row of your spreadsheet is used for column titles. Use the 1rst row (A) of your excel file to describe columns.
  • It is better if your zip/postal code column is in text format. If your zip/postal codes column is in number format all codes beggining with a 0 (zero) wil not be detected.
  • Be sure your columns with quantities are in numeric format (or currency). Otherwise TargetMap will not be able to operate with those columns.
If your excel can not be uploaded, it usually is because the excel file contains corrupted cell formats. An easy solution is to copy the spreadsheet cells and paste into a new one (special paste - values)

  1. How do you make zip codes into territories instead of points or how do you create custom territories?

  2. Hi John, data from zipcodes is also shown in boundaries. If you do not want to see the pinpoints just disable the pinpoint layer. (the eye in the icon) To create custom territories you can use the "paint a map option" or the Territory Manager in the private version Feel free to ask anything you need at crew@targetmap.com

  3. You dont seem to except Excel 2007 file formats (.xlsx or .xlsb). That would be helpful info to add here.

  4. Hi Fletwood,
Excel 2007 files are supported, maybe is an issue with a concrete Excel file.
Could you send us to crew-AT-targetmap.com this file, to check what is happening?

    Thanks.

  5. Can exact addresses be mapped or just zip codes and counties? I am part of a social club and we would like to map out our favorite restaurants/places we've visited as a group.

  9. Hi Christian,

We've already sent you an e-mail. It seems to be your excel filetype. We've saved it in an older filetype and it works fine and we've sent it to you. We will look at this problem carefully on Monday to improve our compatibility.

    Thanks for using TargetMap

  11. Hi,

For now, our application is not compatible with Excel 2010, maybe it is the problem. Save it as an Excel 2007 and you will be able to upload it.

  12. I have an excel file set up as you specify. The first column as postal codes (canada) but only the first 3 leters/number... not the whole thing as I'm try to map regions not addresses.

Will that work? I can't get the excel file to load.

  13. Hi,

No. Codes only work with Zip Codes. You will have to map your regions using the nomenclator.

    Thanks for your interest.

  16. Hi,

Can you send us an e-mail to crew(at)targetmap.com with an accurate explanation of your problem and the Excel file as an example? Do you have a Not to share account?

    Best regards

  18. Hi I am having a problem similar to laurie B and aloha cafe above. I am building a world map with data for each country. However some countries appear in grey. the map says no data for those countries even though the data is right there in the excel and can be seen in the table below the map.

    1. Hi!
If you are using a Not to share account you will be able to see the 80% of your records in the map. You must be receiving a message in the application that explains you that.
      Thanks for using TargetMap!

  19. Let's say neither column contains a numeric value.
For example: Assume I want to create a world map that will display the name of the presidents of each country around the world. The first column (A) will have the country [United States], and the second column (B) will have the president's name [Barack Obama].
How do I display the name of the country AND the president's name onto the LEGEND when moving the cursor over the country? Right now it shows the name of the country and Value 1"?
    Thank you!
    Melvin.

  22. HI,
My excel file is not working. I tried copying and pasting. It has a postal column. It is for worldwide, however - could that be a problem? Or is it a problem that some rows within the sheet are blank? Thanks for your help.

    1. Hi, zip codes are only available in pin points. We don't have the postal areas as boundaries.
      Our apologies for the inconveniences.
      Best regards.
